Day #73 Sue Salvatierra & Caroline Salvatierra (2nd grade)

Bedtime Reading at home often includes books that are not only entertaining but incorporate information about history, geography, or some other topic so that not only can we practice her reading but that we can talk about other topics and expanding her learning.  It is with that in mind that I selected ‘I could do that! Ester Morris Get Women the Vote’ to Mrs. Mohan’s second grade class.  It tells the story of a Esther Morris and her endeavor to get women the right to vote in the new territory of Wyoming in 1869.  It mixed in information about slavery, western expansion and the rights of people to participate in their government with a story of a woman who opens businesses, moves to the wild west and fights for the right to vote. Hopefully it gives the girls in the class an appreciation of what their foremothers had to do to make them equal in society.   Most importantly it demonstrated what a determined person, who won’t let others tell her what to do, can change the world.  What better lesson for a group of second graders to learn?  No one can tell you that you can’t do something, as long as you believe you can and work hard to achieve it.  Self-determination and self esteem is a great lesson to learn at any age.
