Day #20- Mrs. Capezzuto Special Education Staff

I learn from my students every day!

Thanks to Mrs. Gauvain and her third grade class, who knew Massachusetts has a state heroine?  That’s THE ONE THING I learned today!

Her name is Deborah Samson and she was a school teacher in Middleborough.  Growing up on a farm with a family of ten boys, she heard many stories of risk and bravery during the Revolutionary War.  She didn’t want to miss the action, literally, so she pretended to be a boy to fight in that war.  She was wounded – even took a musket ball to the leg – but was never found out.

After the war, she married and had three children of her own.  The family was extremely poor so Ms. Samson’s friend, Paul Revere, asked the government to provide a little money for the family.  So, she became the recipient of the very first government pension.

Deborah Samson was brave and she took risks.  (My kind of woman!) Some character traits just never get old!

One more “fun fact” I learned today: I said “good morning” 77 times today!
