DAy 121 Shared Responsibility
This week was amazing for the students and staff of the Hood School! I could not be more pleased and excited.
I want to thank all of you for your efforts. It was great to see so much engagement and particiption during a chaotic MCAS driven week. We had students working until the close of the school day and staff members jumping up to support them.
Well done and thank you all for preparing our students and helping the persevere through the difficult task they engaged in.
Day 120- Shared By Mr. Quinn
Perseverance in Action
This video has been making its way around the internet over the last couple of weeks (It was even mentioned by Don Cherry!) but I have to admit I just saw it yesterday.
I always love to post inspirational and feel good videos from time to time because I think there's enough bad news out there on a regular basis and every once and a while we need something to put a smile on our face.
Enjoy!

Day 119 Quotes by Grade 5 MCAS Students!
"Mrs. Wright, you taught me so many good strategies to use that MCAS is
easy for me this year!" followed by another fifth grader who said, "If
you notice, Mrs. Wright, it's all of your students who are still
working.. that just goes to show that you are a good teacher for us!"
It just doesn't get ANY better than that!
Day 118 PE Taecher Brandon Eng
Today Brandon E. was the PE Teacher for the day. Today he told the students to sit on the 10 foot line.
The rest is a direct quote from him- "I gave the directions for the game. During the game, I watched them to make sure that they followed the rules and played safe. They did great following the instuctions and had fun. Somtimes I got to play!"
Well Done Mr. PE!

Day 117 MCAS and Perseverance
The topic of the week at the Hood school is Perseverance.
Just ask any Hood School student in grades 3, 4 & 5 what it means.

Day 116- Grade 4 - A few extra days to prepare for long comp!
Today I was able to visit Mrs. Gorman's class and I was impressed with the high quality writing that I observed.
Griffin shared an amazing narrative about going to Fenway Park for the first time.
He included great vocabulary, great descriptions and two similes.
Please see a snapshot below:

Day 115- Grade 3 Student
Today was the first day for MCAS with our grade 3 students. I spoke with each class about
Perseverance!
Charlie learned not to quit, to work hard & never give up!
“The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. They’re there to stop the other people.”

Day 113- A Parent shared a TED on Bullying
Shane Koyczan presented a powerful TED titled "To This Day" ... for the bullied and beautiful. A parent shared it with me. It was powerful! I was able to learn alot from this TED however, I must share my favorite: "Standing up for yourself does not mean embracing violence!"
Please check out more info on Shane

Day 112- Arithmachicks! Grade 5 Math
Today we came to school early to work with Mr. Quinn. We learned to measure area and calculate square footage.
Day 111 Read Across America Day- Mr. Maloney NRMS Vice-Principal
On Wednesday I had the honor and privilege of reading to Mrs. Kelley's
fifth grade class in celebration of Read Across America Day. I was
thoroughly impressed with her students and their insights about the book
I read and their questions about the Middle School.
We all are truly lucky to have such great kids and such great adults working together in our district.
I chose to read "Oh the Places You'll Go" by Dr. Seuss as
one of the main themes of the book is transition. It was an appropriate
book to read as the fifth graders are preparing to make the transition
from elementary school to middle school. It talks about having "Ups and
downs and ins and outs" and how we may make mistakes through life but
it is in the getting up and moving forward where we learn our lessons.
Mrs. Kelley's fifth graders had thoughtful and
poignant comments as we discussed the book and the different transitions
that they have already experienced and some transitions they have yet
to live.
When I returned to the Middle School I immediately
commented to Ms. O'Connell that we are very lucky to have such well
prepared students to look forward to next year at NRMS.
I want to thank Mrs. Hegarty and Mr. McKay for inviting me to read to
their students at the Hood School and to Mrs. Kelley and her class for
being such great hosts.

Day 109- Grade Two Ella C. Abraham Lincoln
What did I learn about Abraham Lincoln
He was born in 1809 in Kentucky. He lived in a small log cabin. He did not like slavery. He loved reading. He walked two miles to school and back. He was elected President in 1806. In 1842, he married Mary Todd and had four sons.

Day 108- Fine Arts Night- Ms. Taylor
I relearned something on Fine Arts Night. I watched a girl who seems
quiet and shy in class, take the stage like a bolt of lightning when it was her dance solo!
I was reminded that ALL students have so much to offer and they will find their passion if we provide them many opportunities. Thank you Hood school students! You Rock!
Ms Taylor.

Day 106- A Grade 5 Virtual Field Trip? Mia H.
Today our class went on a virtual field trip. We learned about President Lincoln and his pocket watch. Please see this link to learn some amazing facts about this watch: http://www.smithsonianmag.com/history-archaeology/Lincolns-Pocket-Watch-Reveals-Long-Hidden-Message.html#

Day 107 Grade 1 Field Trip Rachael & Mom
Today we went on a field trip to Berkley College of Music in Boston. This was the first field trip for us!
We rode on a bus and went through a tunnel. We learned to stay together in a group, we watched a performance of Alexander and the terrible, horrible, no good really bad day and we learned that the play could be different from a book. I thought the play was better than the book We had a really fun day.

Day 105- The Keys to Success in Grade 4
The question is always asked, How can we help our students understand that they need to invest in their learning? Mrs. Hogan worked with her students to come up with lists of strategies they can use to be successful in school.
